The tradition of winemaking in Monterey County dates back 200 years when the Franciscan friars planted the first wine grapes in the Spanish mission of Soledad. However, it wasn't until the early 1960's that Monterey County's potential for excellent varietal grapes began to emerge. By the 1970's, Monterey County had become the largest premium wine grape region in California. Today, Monterey County boasts over 40 wineries covering more than 40,000 acres. Monterey County wine country is comparable in quality and quantity to the better-known regions of Napa, Burgundy and Bordeaux.

Grapes grown in Monterey County are characterized by their intense true varietal flavor, which results in ines with exceptional integrity. Nurtured by the cold marine climate, the grapes remain on the vine a full month longer than in other wine-producing regions. This allows for the timely maturity of both red and white grape varieties and the production of consistently excellent vintages from this region.

The varietal that first establish Monterey County's reputation as a premium wine-growing region was chardonnay. Buttery chardonnays grown in Monterey County have received rich praise from critics and competitors alike. Today, the numerous awards and accolades bestowed on chardonnays designated as Monterey County appellations are now being accorded to Monterey County Pinot Noirs. Both varietals exhibit unparalleled richness and finish.

With such a bounty of wines, it's no surprise that an abundant of wine-related events lure visitors to Monterey County each year. Annual events such as the Monterey Wine Festival in spring, the Winemaker's Celebration in summer, and the Great Wine Escape weekend in autumn combine art of the vine with the culinary skills of locally renown and world-class chefs. These events, as well as year-round samplings in the numerous tasting rooms throughout Monterey County, offer connoisseurs and enthusiasts a taste of Monterey that will linger on the palate long after they have returned home.
