Monterey County: Jazz, Blues and Bach: Music Festivals and More
The Monterey Jazz Festival, the Carmel Bach Festival, the Monterey Bay Blues Festival these three jewels in the crown of Monterey County's
musical tradition are prime examples of the quality and diversity of international music festivals presented annually.
The music festival season begins the first weekend in March with Dixieland Monterey,
which features bands from around the U.S. performing in cabarets around historic Old Monterey.
This is followed by the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, a celebration of America's own unique contribution
to the international songbook. Presented on the last weekend in June, this festival features first-class
artists such as Etta James, Ruth Brown, Robert Cray and Clarence Carter in a tribute to a true American art form.
Classical music is highlighted in July through August with the Carmel Bach Festival,
a 23-day event directed by world-renowned conductor Bruno Weil. This world-class musical event includes concerts, recitals, lectures, master classes and the spectacular Founders' Memorial Concert at the historic Carmel Mission Basilica.
September's typical Indian summer weather brings with it Monterey's most widely
acclaimed musical event, the Monterey Jazz Festival. Miles Davis, Stan Getz,
Dizzie Gillespie, Dave Brubeck—these giants of jazz are a part of the history of the Monterey Jazz Festival,
the longest continuous running jazz festival in the world. For 35 years the Jazz Festival has brought
the masters as well as the young lions to the beautiful Monterey Peninsula for a midsummer's night dream.
