Deemed an historic landmark of the State of California and referred to as “the traditional seat of legitimate drama in San Francisco since 1910,” the Geary Theater was a key factor in keeping the performing arts alive after the 1906 earthquake and has played a central role in San Francisco theater ever since. For nearly 100 years the Geary has taken pride in retaining its early 20th century character and design reflecting the late Victorian tradition and incorporating touches of neoclassicism and baroque influence.
From the beginning, the Geary attracted major names in the business including Isadora Duncan, Nazimova and Sarah Bernhardt. Many other legendary stage figures have followed, further solidifying the Geary theater's reputation for excellence.
Since 1974, the theater has been owned by the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.), San Francisco's highly acclaimed training institute, regional theater and breeding ground of stars such as Danny Glover, Annette Bening, Denzel Washington and Winona Ryder. A.C.T. productions are run year round in this venue and extensive tours of the theater are available on a regular basis for a small fee.
