Las Vegas

Poolside in Las Vegas

Lounging on the beach can be heaven. The waves. The sand. The sun. But in Las Vegas, lying by the pool is paradise, too. Imagine the beach with beverage and food service, plus music piped in via state-of-the-art sound systems.

As a matter of fact, many Las Vegas properties do their best to incorporate the beach into their poolside areas. Mandalay Bay actually trucked in more than 1,700 tons of sand from Southern California for its 11-acre tropical water environment. The area includes a 1.6-million-gallon wave pool with waves that reach as high as five feet, three swimming pools and a jogging track. The resort's lazy river is 3.25 feet deep and stretches around the entire pool deck.

For swimmers looking for a real workout, The Mirage features four lap lanes 25 meters in length, the Olympic-size standard, in addition to its waterfalls.

Never fear if the gambling bug has bitten. Many Las Vegas properties bring the casino games to the pool area. The Tropicana and Hard Rock Hotel offer swim-up tables featuring various games ranging from blackjack to roulette.

And if you are still longing for the comforts normally associated with being indoors but crave the convenience of being poolside, cabanas may be the answer. Nearly every major property features luxurious cabanas offering a variety of amenities including large, cushioned lounge chairs on individual patios, marble tables, private dressing areas, telephones, electrical outlets (for CDs or laptops), misting systems, ceiling fans, wet bars and refrigerators.

Just because the sun sets doesn't mean it's time to go inside. A new trend in Las Vegas entertainment is transforming the pool areas into outdoor nightclubs where anything goes.

The Palms' Skin and Green Valley Ranch's Whiskey Beach offer an after-hours nightclub experience under the stars. At the Imperial Palace, Imperial Hawaiian Luau entices guests with a Polynesian-style buffet and outdoor entertainment including fire-knife dancers and hula dancers.

The Las Vegas Hilton also throws pool parties with live entertainment, an unlimited buffet with burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and roasted pig on a spit.
