John McCain Biography

A Biography of John McCain, the Republican Presidential Candidate 2008.

John Sidney McCain, III, was born in Coco Solo (Panama Kanal Zone), Panama, on August 29th, 1936, as son of John Sidney McCain, a 4-star Admiral of the Navy, and Roberta Wright McCain.

McCain attended the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and eventually decided for a military career and to become a naval aviator.
Between 1954 and 1958 he attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. On Juli 3rd, 1965, he marries Carol Shepp. In 1980 this marriage comes to an end and they get divorced. Three children resulted from the marriage: Douglas and Andrew came from Carol's previous marriage and John McCain and Carol had a daughter, Sidney.

In spring of 1967 McCain is sent to Vietnam and becomes on October 26th of the same year a prisoner of war. more than 5 years later on march 14th, 1973, after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords, John McCain and nearly 600 fellow POWs were released. He returns to the United States and stays in the military to continue his career.
On May 17th, 1980, he married his 2nd wife Cindy Hensley from Phoenix, Arizona. The couple has four children: Meghan, Jack, Jimmy and Bridget.
In 1981 John McCain retired from the military in the rank of a Captain of the U.S. Navy and starts his political career.

Political Career

U.S. Senator John McCain has a long career of public service.

In 1982, he was elected to Congress representing what was then the first congressional district of Arizona.

In 1986, he was elected to the United States Senate to take the place of Arizona's great Senator Barry Goldwater.

In 2000, Senator McCain ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. He is currently the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. He also serves on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.

Recent life

Senator McCain is currently the senior senator from Arizona.

Senator McCain has seven children. He and his wife, Cindy, reside in Phoenix.

John McCain is Presidential Candidate for the Republican Party in 2008.
