National Do-not-call List USA

One of the first things everybody who owns the first telephone line will learn is... that not only your friends can call you but also telemarketers who are going to disturb you nonstop. Shortly after your phone line is connected your number is available to telemarketing companies which immediately start to bother you trying to sell whatsoever.
Annoying, because they usually call when you're coming home, while you have dinner, and so on. This is the best time to reach you.
That's why the government came up with a sort of protection plan against unwanted calls.

Official National Do Not Call Registry Opened June 27, 2003

The opening of the National Do Not Call Registry, a free service of the federal government developed to give consumers a choice about getting telemarketing calls at home, was announced 2003-June-27 by President George W. Bush, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Timothy J. Muris, and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Michael K. Powell.
Purpose of the list: The National Do Not Call Registry will make it easier and more efficient for consumers to stop getting telemarketing calls they do not want. Consumers can register in two ways: online or by calling a toll-free number. Registration is free and is available in both English and Spanish.

If you’ve received an e-mail telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database, rest assured that this is not the case. Telemarketing to cell phone numbers has always been illegal in most cases and will continue to be so. In response to recent e-mail campaigns urging consumers to place their cell phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission issue this advisory to give consumers the facts. One e-mail making the rounds says:

“JUST A REMINDER...In a few weeks, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS... To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888/382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. PASS THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS...”

Another version claims: “The Federal Trade Commission has set up a "do not call" list. It is called a cell phone registry. To be included on the "do not call" list, you must call from the number you wish to register.”

Here’s what you need to know about the National Do Not Call Registry program:

  • FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent.
  • The federal government does not maintain a national cell phone registry. Personal cell phone users have always been able to add their numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry — the same Registry consumers use to register their land lines — either online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 from the telephone number they wish to register. Registrations become effective within 31 days of signing up and are active for five years. There is no cut-off date or deadline for registrations.
  • Business-to-business calls are not covered under the Registry.

2004-June-24 Update:
Commemorating the one-year anniversary of the National Do Not Call Registry’s launch, the Federal Trade Commission today released updated Do Not Call registration and complaint figures. As of June 18, 2004, consumers registered 62 million phone numbers and had reported just 428,000 possible violations. About 200 companies had more than 100 consumer complaints filed against them.
For consumers who think they have registered their number on the National Do Not Call Registry and are still getting telemarketing sales calls, the FTC recommends that they check to see that their number is on the Registry. They can verify that their number is on the Registry two ways: online at www.donotcall.gov (click on “Verify a Registration”), or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236) from the phone number they wish to verify.
According to the FTC data, 83 percent, or more than 50 million, of the phone numbers on the Do Not Call Registry came from consumer registrations – 61 percent were registered on the Internet and 22 percent using the toll-free number. Seventeen percent – approximately 10 million phone numbers – were transferred from existing state registries. Eighty-two percent of consumer complaints were filed online.
Consumers who wish to register their phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry may do so at any time by visiting www.donotcall.gov or calling 1-888-382-1222 from the number they want to register. Consumers who register online must have a valid e-mail address and must click on a link received in their e-mail to complete their registration. Registration is always free and easy. Consumers may file also file a complaint at www.donotcall.gov or by calling the toll-free number.

Consumers nationwide can register online at DONOTCALL.GOV. Consumers in states west of the Mississippi River (including Louisiana and Minnesota) can register by calling, toll-free, 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236).
