Toll-free telephone numbers

1-800, 1-888 and other toll-free phone numbers
When you see a phone number that starts with 1-800- ... or 1-888-... then it is a toll-free service number. Most major companies offer this type of nation-wide number to reach their service departments.
Since these numbers are very popular, new number ranges were needed and i.e. 1-877-, 1-866, 1-855 numbers were 'invented'.
877/866/855 numbers have not the same great reputation as 800 numbers have and even many Americans are not really sure about if 855 is really toll-free or just a local area code.
Hotels and Motels sometimes even charge for a 1-800-Number a fee, but that is a hotel phone line usage fee. When you make the same call at a public phone it's free.
