Since the 1880s, visitors have been enjoying the spectacular beauty of the Central Coast. Located between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Monterey County's dramatic ocean scenery, pristine pine forests, and historic communities continue to beckon adventure-seekers, seafarers, artists, writers and vacationers. And no other California county can boast 99 miles of breathtaking Pacific coastline.

In 1947 a young woman by the name of Norma Jean was crowned Castroville's first "Artichoke Queen." She later gained fame as actress Marilyn Monroe.

Castroville, located on Monterey Bay, produces 85% of the nations artichokes.

The 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach is one of only nine private toll roads in the country, and the only one west of Mississippi.
The Monterey Peninsula is a world-renown golf capital with 25 public and private courses.
Three courses located in Pebble Beach -Spyglass, Poppy Hills and Pebble Beach itself - are consistently ranked among the top ten courses in the nation.

Lighthouses in Monterey County
The dramatic Point Sur Lightstation sits perched on a promontory of land mid way on the Big Sur coast. This historic lighthouse offers guided tours each weekend and other times by appointment. Its huge fresnel lens is now housed in the Monterey Maritime Museum in downtown Monterey.

Nearby in Pacific Grove is Point Piños Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the California Coast. This lighthouse is open to the public on weekend afternoon.

Monterey Bay Aquarium
Located on historic Cannery Row. View marvels of the ocean planet at the heart of the nation's largest marine sanctuary. More than 100 galleries featuring jelly fish, playful sea otters, quirky penguins, powerful sharks, elusive octopus and giant ocean sunfish. Children love the hands-on exhibits in their very own Splash Zone.
