Ghost Town: St. Elmo & Independence
St. Elmo is situated west of Buena Vista and reflects the old mining towns of Colorado very well.
Closeby is the Mary Murphy Mine which was active until 1926 - every year gold worth millions of dollars came out of the mine.
What to find: shops, many buildings, souveniers, etc.
Independence is reachable via CO 82 from Aspen. Independence's elevation is ca. 3.000 m (8,500 ft) and can normally be reached only during the summer months.
Ashcroft, auch nicht weit von Aspen entfernt,
hat einst zwei lokale Zeitungen mit Geschichten gefüllt, 20 Saloons,
eine Schule und zahlreiche Privathäuser beherbergt, bevor es mit dem Ende
des Goldrausches ebenfalls verlassen wurde. Heute kümmert sich die Aspen Historical Society um
die Erhaltung der neun übriggebliebenen Gebäude.

Rio Grand County, Colorado
Near Bennet Peak.
Gold was discovered in 1870. Soon after 14 saloons and nine mills followed.
In 1883 the town was almost destoyed by a fire>In 1953 some of the mines were reopened.
During WWII the town produced a lot of copper. Remains: many original buildings.
