Roxborough & Red Rock State Parks

Roxborough State Park is officially designated as a National Natural Landmark, a State Natural Area and a National Archeological District. More than 1.2 billion years of geologic time are represented by the spectacular red-rock formations found within the park, which is located at the intersection of north Rampart Range Road and Roxborough Park Road in Douglas County.

Ecologically, the park is highly diverse as a result of its location in a transition zone between the plains and the mountains. The area’s geological structure has resulted in microclimates that have produced seven distinct plant communities in a unique mixture of prairie and mountain species.

As a result, Roxborough is home to abundant wildlife, including black bear, mountain lion and deer. The park is known for its spectacular sightseeing, tranquil surroundings, fascinating trails and visitor center.

This park offers hiking, snowshoeing and excellent educational programs on Colorado history, geology and wildlife watching. Roxborough is a day-use park only and does not offer camping. There are no pets and no fires allowed at Roxborough.

More than a million Denver-area residents have one of nature’s jewels in their backyard: Roxborough State Park, a short drive southwest of Denver.

Roxborough is a Colorado Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark for good reason. The 3,329-acre park is filled with dramatic red-rock formations, distinct plant communities, and a host of wildlife ranging from black bears to mule deer.

Visitors can take in all of Roxborough’s geological wonders via a series of trails for every level of hiker. The Fountain Valley Overlook is only 100 yards from the Visitor Center and provides spectacular views of several beautiful rock formations, including the Fountain Formation, Lyons Formation, and the Dakota Hogback.

Many visitors tote their cameras to capture one of the many beautiful views or animal sightings such as red fox from one of the park’s overlooks.
