In the early 1870's the little mining post was founded and the in following 30-40 years the growing community experienced real prosperity. It was silver which made millionaires in that time.

Today, Silverton is a tourist attraction reflecting the Old West with its nice painted houses. Embedded in the surrounding San Juan Mountains it is situated along the US550, which is a part of the All-American Scenic Byway "San Juan Skyway".

Those who don't come here by car or motorcycle can also take the historic "Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad", which starts in Durango.
