St. Petersburg Beach / Clearwater Beach

St. Petersburg Beach / Clearwater Beach

Both beach communities are found west of Tampa. About 20 small islands, called barrier islands, can be found off the coast line of these cities.

But what really will amaze the visitor is the white sandy beach. The stretch along Caladesi Island State Park and of Fort De Soto Park are especially popular among visitors.

To explore the coast the best way to do so is to cruise with your car along the beach stretch. FOr example start you tour in Clearwater by taking Clearwater Causeway 60.

Caladesi Island

Taking direction north brings you within reach to Caladesi Island, but you have eventually to take a boat either from Clearwater Beach with commercial tour operators or from Honeymoon Island with the ferry (every hour) for about $3-$4.
Once you have reached Caladesi Island you will encounter about 3 miles (5km) of perfect white sandy beaches without being disturbed by hotel fronts.
Picnic areas, a camp ground a small marina for 20 boats - that's it! Henry Scharrer from Switzerland was the first known settler on Caladesi Island in 1888.

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Heading south from Clearwater Beach one can drive the entire coast stretch on the SR699. At the junction with SR 682 (to Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which gets real impressive at night when illuminated), one can head further south on SR 679 to Fort De Soto Park.
Egmont Key, a tiny island in the bay with a little lighthouse, can only reached by boat.

John's Pass Village & Boardwalk

This is a reconstruction of a turn-of-the-century fishing village. Located in Madeira Beach, 12901 Gulf Boulevard East. This area accommodates about 100 shops and restaurants embedded in a nautical theme.

Beach, Beach, Beach...

Sand Key Park in Clearwater is often rated as one of the top beaches in the United States.
St. Pete Beach offers white, sandy beaches and Claerwater Beach as the most popular one was voted Citybeach No. 1 in 1999.
More secluded beaches: Caladesi Island, Sand-Key, Fort De Soto Park, Shell Key und Egmont Key

The 37 miles long Pinellas Trail is one of the longest linear trails in the southeast of the United States - perfect for jogging, inline skating and bicycling.
