Carson City, centrally located the starting point for day trips

Visitors who take advantage of the various and affordable lodging options in Carson City can venture out to take in the beauty of Lake Tahoe, the hustle and bustle of Reno, or take a step back into the old west flavor of Virginia City, all just 35 minutes away. Carson City’s central location makes it an ideal starting point for day trips to the area’s many attractions.

Lake Tahoe, North America’s largest alpine lake, offers some of the country’s most beautiful scenery and diversity of recreation. The 72-mile drive around its rim provides a day full of shopping, sightseeing, gaming, recreational stops and natural encounters.

The south shore features larger casinos with big name entertainment and Nevada’s 24-hour lifestyle. Heavenly Mountain Resort, one of the country’s largest ski areas, offers panoramic views of the lake and valley from its slopes. The Heavenly Gondola takes visitors 2.4 miles up the mountain for stunning views of Lake Tahoe any time of year. Another of the area’s favorite attractions is a lake tour aboard the Tahoe Queen or M.S. Dixie II. From offshore, the depth and clarity of Lake Tahoe are rivaled only by the views of Desolation Wilderness and its 10,000 foot jagged peaks rising from the shoreline.

A visit along the west shore carries visitors past vistas of Emerald Bay, one of the most photographed inland harbors in the world. Considered the quieter side of the lake, vacationers will find cozy bed and breakfast inns, specialty boutiques, and historical marinas like Sunnyside, Chambers Landing, and Homewood.

For those interested in the razzle-dazzle and flashing lights of gaming establishments, Reno is about one half-hour north of Carson City. The drive from Carson City to “The Biggest Little City in the World” courses through the small ranches and lakebed of the Washoe Valley. In addition to casino action, Reno is home to the National Automobile Museum, home of casino founder Bill Harrah’s private collection, and numerous special events including the Championship Air Races, Reno Hot Air Balloon Races, Reno Rodeo and Hot August Nights.

Virginia City is just 20 minutes from Carson City, but takes visitors as far back as the 1800s to the days of the famous Comstock Lode. Original wooden plank sidewalks, old-time saloons, clapboard houses and storefronts, graveyards and silver mines keep the Old West alive in this authentic town.

For those who appreciate incredible landscapes, who are fascinated by the settlement of the west, who are in search of recreation and relaxation or the excitement of gaming and entertainment, Carson City and its neighbors have something to enjoy around every turn.
