Best reached from Boulder (CO) and Nederland (CO), however, there are other roads coming in from the north. If you start your journey from Boulder, take Mapleton Ave from Broadway and drive Mapleton Ave westwards. Follow the road into the mountains. It will lead you through Sunshine Canyon Rd and the last few miles are a dirt road. Normally, any car can go up there, however, during bad weather periods an all-wheel-drive vehicle and good tires are recommended.
LOCATION: see map further below.
The drive from Boulder is about 10 mi / 16 km and takes ca. 20-30 minutes.

it is told that Gold Hill was the first permanent gold mining camp in Colorado. During 1859 gold was found and one year later more than 1500 gold diggers lived here. Check out the Miners Hotel, built in 1872, whih still has furniture from that time on display.

Today, about 100 to 200 people live in Gold Hill. The town has a nice General Store where you should make a stop and have coffee and some cake.
